Because of its excellent waterproofing, flexibility, and adhesive properties to bind and hold the aggregates in the pavement, asphalt has been used extensively for paving driveways, parking lots and roadways. Asphalt or hot mix as it is sometimes called, consists of a number of components. Various aggregates, mineral fillers, liquid asphalt, and hardeners are added to make up the mix. Liquid asphalt is also called the binder, because it binds and holds all the components together. Asphalt is extremely durable and is easy to maintain. It’s relatively low cost make it the most economical paving medium.
