Infrared patching is a modern, cost effective method of repairing damage to asphalt
parking lots, driveways and
roads. Infrared light rays are used to heat the asphalt to it’s original pliable state. The old existing asphalt is then raked and mixed with new asphalt. The entire area is then compacted to form a permanent seamless patch. Infrared patching can be used to repair a variety of damage to asphalt or simply to smooth dips and other surface imperfections. Although infrared patching requires less time and materials than more traditional methods, it is not recommended for all repairs
The removal and replacement method of repair is used in areas of extreme damage, where the asphalt structure has failed or the integrity of the sub base has been compromised. This method involves cutting out and removing the damaged sections of pavement. Next the sub base or base layers must be re-stabilized. If required additional aggregate material is added and the entire area is re-compacted. A bonding agent called tack coat is applied to the vertical edges of patch area to help the new asphalt adhere to the old. Finally new asphalt is added and compacted to finish the repair.
The asphalt overlay method of repair, as the name implies, is accomplished by installing a new layer of asphalt over the existing asphalt pavement. Tack coat is applied
to help the new asphalt adhere to the old. Asphalt Overlays are used primarily on projects with little or no disturbance of the underlying sub base. Aesthetically pleasing, the new asphalt provides additional structural capacity and smoothness for driving comfort. The type and amount of traffic as well as your needs determine the thickness of the overlay.
